CEO Talk
At Chokchai Elephant Camp, we're dedicated to the welfare of elephants that have been rescued from various challenging situations such as logging and captivity. Our mission is to provide them with the care they need to recover and thrive. However, the process of rehabilitating and potentially releasing these majestic creatures back into the wild is a complex journey that requires careful consideration.
The Rehabilitation Process:
When elephants are rescued, they often arrive in a state of distress and dependency on human care. During their time with us, we help them recover physically and emotionally. However, this period of rehabilitation can lead to a loss of natural instincts, such as finding food and socializing with their fellow elephants.
Learning to Be Wild Again:
Releasing rescued elephants back into their natural habitat isn't as simple as opening a gate. Our team works tirelessly to rewild these animals, teaching them crucial skills like foraging and interacting with other elephants. This process aims to restore their ability to live independently in the wild.
Habitat Considerations:
Before any release is considered, we meticulously evaluate the local ecosystem and resources available in their natural habitat. It's crucial to ensure that the released elephants will have access to food, water, and a safe environment. The presence of existing wild elephant populations and potential conflicts are also taken into account.
Ensuring a Bright Future:
Sometimes, due to their dependency on humans or other factors, releasing rescued elephants back into the wild might not be the best option. In such cases, these amazing creatures can find a forever home in protected sanctuaries or reserves, where they can live happily and safely.
